Fade Resist Dark and Lovely Hair Dye

What is hair colouring?

Hair coloring is the practice of dyeing of hair by applying synthetic, semi-synthetic or natural hair dyes for cosmetic reasons that range from;

dyeing of hair to hide greying hair,

change of hair colour to fashionable choice of colour,

masking of hair defects or injury

enhancement or restoration of the natural hair colour after being by sun or hairdressing bleaching.

Although, Eugène Paul Louis Schueller, the French Pharmacist , one of the founders of modern advertising and  founder of L’Oréal, the world’s leading company in cosmetics and beauty offering the L’oreal Gift set, is widely recognized as the inventor of our modern age first synthetic commercial hair dyes in 1947 which he called Aureole and later changed to L’Oréal, hair coloring dates back to ancient times.

Historically, black hair dye is the oldest and most popular. Practice of hair colouring dates back to 1500 BC , ancient times when Egyptians of then reportedly use Henna to cover greying hair.

Later, ancient Greeks and Romans extract plant dyes to create permanent black hair dye for hair before experimenting with hair dyes from 2-month fermented leeches in lead vessels then several hundred years later, extended to developing formula for other hair colour dye apart from black.

These different colours were reportedly used for different purposes of identification. For example, the Roman empire authorities prescribe yellow for prostitutes while the Saxons and Gauls military reportedly use hair dye colour to indicate ranks and scare opponents in battle.

Till date, hair coloring is still very popular and it can be done professionally by a hairdresser or at home using commercial hair dye or home made hair dye.

What is hair colour dye?

Hair colour is a natural, semi-synthetic or synthetic dye which is made for application to the hair so that it bonds to the hair or scalp substrate to which it is  applied.

This bond can be permanent or temporary but can still be removed  Hair dye is generally applied as liquid , and a mordant included in the formulation to improve the fastness of the dye on the hair fibre.

What are the ingredients in Hair Dye?

These are the ingredients added in the hair dye formula. They may be natural or synthetic products and each ingredient plays a role in the overall action of the hair dye when applied.

For most commercial hair dye, they have secret formulations which most times are complex to decipher especially by non scientists. However, there are basic ingredients in all hair dyes

Apart from these basic chemicals, hair dye producers may include some other chemicals used to give special qualities to their products.

These may be by adding shampoos, fragrances, substances that with make their hair dye formula colour last longer, creamy, foamy, or thick, or contribute to the imparting the dye colour to your hair.

Dyes

Dyes are to give the hair colour. The dye components are made from amino compounds and metallic oxides, for example, 4-amino-2-hydroxytoluene,m-Aminophenol, iron oxide, titanium oxide etc.

Modifiers

This class of ingredients are added to hair dyes to modify the colour shade and stabilize the dye. Actually, it is the modifiers that complement the dye pigment to bring out color tones. Example of a modifier used in hair dyes is resorcinol

Alkalizers

This is to keep the dye formulation pH in the alkaline range of over 7. Dyes work best in a highly alkaline pH. Example of alkalizers used in hair dyes is Ammonium hydroxide

Antioxidants

They prevent the dye from being  oxidized easily in the hair thereby losing its colour. Some other antioxidants addes help make the nice fragrances linger. Examples of antioxidants used are sodium sulfite, tocopherol acetate etc

Soaps

Soaps are included to wash the hair to remove left over substances after the hair colour has fastened to the hair.

Wetting agent

Used to moisten and soften the hair so as to allow the entry of the dyes and other components into the hair stands surfaces

Fragrances

Expectedly, they are added to give very nice and appealing smell to the hair and mask the somewhat offensive smell of some of the hair dye ingredients such as ammonia smell.

Hair dyes are usually packaged with a developer, which is in a separate bottle. The developer is most often based on hydrogen peroxide, with the addition of small amounts of other chemicals depending on the manufacturer.

There are concerns that some of these ingredients may pose some level of health hazards so you need to check out some of the ingredients in your choice of hair dyes or make your natural homemade hair dyes.

For example, some permanent hair dyes/ hair tints contain some  ingredients that may be harmful when absorbed in large doses.

There is a list of banned substances for use in hair dyes. The European Commission banned 22 ingredients in hair dyes because there is concern about their health safety.

How To Use Hair Dye When Pregnant

Sometimes, you can do without the hassles of hair colouring during your pregnancy period but if you have to colour your hair while pregnant, there is a good way to do it and safe to your unborn child.

Use the safest natural hair dyes like pure henna and choose foil highlights or low lights, this way the hair colour is not applied directly to your scalp, regardless of the type of hair dye product.

How To Make Hair Dyes?

There are two different categories of hair dyes; Home made and commercial scale hair dyes.

How To make Home-Made hair dyes?

To make simple home made dyes is very simple.

Select your choice of herbs that contain the dye colour you want. Cut and mash them into tiny pieces.

The smaller the material is, the greater the surface area exposed to the liquid mixture to be used in extracting the dye from the herbs to create a stronger and darker dye.

If you desire to use hair dye paste,  mix the cut pieces herbs with some hot water (and you may add some white spirit to extract alcohol-soluble dyes present in the herbs too) and make into a paste.

Add a small amount of warm water-ethanol mixture in drops at a time until you get a thick viscous paste.

For natural hair dyes colors that is made from as a decoction, use a large amount of herbs – 100grams of herbs to 2 cups water.

Cover the container tightly and place on stove then brew until you have a concentrated decoction extract.
Filter to remove the natural dye, allow to simmer then rinse your hair with it.

How To Apply home made Hair dye.

Pack and twist your hair holding in place then secure on top of head.
If using a paste, apply the paste to the roots and cover with a shower cap,and if you are using the brewed decoction, rinse deeply and cover in shower cap.

Do not use a tower as the dye may discolour your towel and washing off the dye from the towel may require some extra work.

For both types of preparation, leave on for a half hour or so and rinse out the dye in the shower or bathtub.

Allow water to drain completely and leave your dyed hair to dry, preferably, in the sun.

Can you make Homemade Hair Dye for All Different Colors?

Yes you can.

Here’s a list of herbs that work best for each hair color type.

Black: henna,black walnut powder

Blonde:Lemonjuice,chamomile and calendula

Brown: Rhubarb root ,hibiscus flower,calendula

Red:Pureed beets with vinegar rinse.

How to make the color of natural hair dye last longer

Most of these dyes are not permanent but the stronger and darker the dye the longer it takes to fade. So make sure your decoction is strong and dark.

Apply very well by rinsing deep and longer enough to reach even the hair roots.

If you have hair that grows very fast or much faster than the natural hair dye colour fades, you will need to apply more frequently.

Avoid use of hot styling tools and do not rinse your dyed hair with hot water.

You will need to keep reapplying the hair dye like once or more a week
