What is Dog Food?

Dog food is a kibble meal essentiallly  formulated to be served for consumption by dogs but may be consumed by other canines related to dogs like wolves, foxes, and jackals who naturally live in the wild. The commercial ones are ground and made into dry pellets like biscuits called kibble.

Though domestic dogs still have common characteristics with their wild relatives, including a preference for feeding on flesh, they are considered more as  omnivores than carnivorous.

What is dog food really made of?

In reality, the formulation of commercial dog produced by one dog food manufacturer varies from another. However, considering that dogs have some common food nutritional needs, these common nutrients will be found in mostly all dog foods although the source of the nutrient and the quantity added to the dog food by the manufacturer may differ.

For example, most dog foods will commonly contain meat, meat byproducts, grains, cereals vitamins, minerals, animal fat and preservatives.

What are the Major ingredients to look for in healthy dog food

Before you choose that healthy dog food for your dog or related canine, look out for the following:

Real Meat Source

The dog food label should have printed on it the source of the meat,if it is beef or chicken or lamb  and percentage of the total composition it is .

Meat Byproducts

The first two ingredients usually are meat sources. This is formulated to achieve a high meat protein meal for dogs and make the meal carnivorous biased.

Zero Fillers

Fillers are usually difficult for dogs to digest . They have low nutritional value and may fill up a dog too soon( some quickly raise the blood sugar and quickly drops making the dog hungry too soon). For these reasons, the healthiest of dog foods don’t have fillers at all but when found in dog foods, they are represented by cereal by-products, peanut hulls, corn bran, white flour etc.

No Artificial Preservatives.

To increase shelf life of dog foods, preservatives are added.
However, when dog foods containing artificial preservatives are consumed by your dog, over time, the artificial preservatives usually build up and raise the risk of toxicity in your dog causing unpleasant health consequences.

Examples of artificial preservatives found in dog foods are;

BHA

BHT

-Ethoxyquin

Propyl gallate.

Propylene glycol.

TBHQ

Vegetables

Like meat, the source of the vegetable in the dog food you eventually choose should be printed on the label.
Look out for corn, if it is there, choose another dog food.

What will stimulate a dog’s appetite?

Although MSG is added to some dog food as flavour and taste enhancer, it is generally regarded as bad for your dog.

So in the absence of artificial taste enhancers, you can add warm broth or aromatic herbs like ginger, dill, peppermint etc and serve the dog food warm so that the  pungent aroma can travel through the air and when it reaches the smell senses of your dog, will naturally help stimulate appetite in your dog.

Before serving your dog, make sure the meal is complete and balanced for its stage of life, and if it has any medical issues. The meal can be is entirely kibble diet mixed with some cooked or raw meat, fish, vegetables, rice and aromatic herbs.
